Avon Lake High School students Catherine Fazio and Aubrey Kozar recently helped to share an inspiring message of understanding, inclusion, and perseverance with Eastview Elementary students during Disability Awareness Week. The special initiative took place during the week of Tuesday, March 4th through Tuesday, March 11th and was organized by Catherine Fazio, a sophomore and former Eastview student. Each day featured a series of videos, books, and class discussions centered around a different type of disability, including physical, intellectual/learning, sensory, Autism, and Down Syndrome. The initiative culminated in an all-school assembly also coordinated by Catherine and which featured several guest speakers.
“It was truly amazing to be able to return to my former elementary school and organize Disability Awareness Week,” shared Catherine. “The week was a powerful reminder that we need to celebrate each other’s differences. By creating an environment full of compassion and understanding, we can continue to build a more welcoming environment that embraces everyone for being uniquely themselves.”
Summer Andrews, a Down Syndrome Advocate and Gigi's Playhouse Parent, shared about her personal experience and the over twenty free programs offered by GiGi’s Playhouse which help children and adults build skills, make new friends, and grow confidence to reach their individual goals.
Avon Lake Freshman Aubrey Kozar shared her inspiring story of growing up with a prosthetic leg after being born with a condition called fibular hemimelia, and overcoming challenges with hard work, determination and the unwavering support of her family, friends, and coaches. Aubrey has excelled in several sports, including competing in track, hurdles, and high jump at Learwood, as a member of the High School Cheerleading Squad ,and most notably, winning two Division I para state titles this year as a member of the Swim team. Moving forward, Aubrey aspires to join the USA Paralympic team.
“Participating in the assembly allows me to share my personal story and experiences, showing that everyone, regardless of their differences, can achieve their goals and pursue their passions,” shared Aubrey. “It can create a more welcoming environment for all students by encouraging empathy, understanding, and support. When students see that we all face challenges but can overcome them with perseverance and the help of others, it fosters a sense of belonging and inclusivity, making everyone feel valued and accepted for who they are.”
After the assembly, each grade level spent a portion of the afternoon visiting the school gym to participate in a variety of activities which simulated different disabilities. The integrated learning activities and personal stories helped to provide Eastview students with a deeper level of understanding and empathy for all individuals. Thank you to Catherine Fazio and Aubrey Kozar for their contributions and leadership in providing this impactful learning experience for Avon Lake students.
